Celeste Becker always loved dogs. While she battled with Lou Gehrig's disease, some of her friends decided they wanted to do something in her honor, and to bring joy to her in the hospital. They began to sponsor dogs here at the Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter, and sending pictures of the dogs to Celeste, who would tape them up by her bedside.

Celeste died just after Thanksgiving this year, 2006. Many of her friends still continue to sponsor dogs in her memory, for which we here at the shelter feel very thankful for. If you would like to sponsor a dog in her memory, please click the link below.

Sponsoring a dog for just $35 pays for the dog's spaying or neutering. Spayed or neutered animals can attend our off-site adoption days, and can also be adopted without a waiting period. These animals have a better chance of being adopted quickly, and so sponsoring a dog can help save the animal's life.

Donate a BedOur dogs love to sleep on Kuranda Dog beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for a shelter dog to sleep in comfort, please click here.†† They are perfect for emaciated dogs, dogs recovering from heartworm treatment, and arthritic dogs.

The shelter
Our Vision:

The Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter is a non-profit, 501c3 organization supported primarily through donations.† The goal of the shelter is to aid the human and animal residents of† Madison and Oglethorpe counties through companion animal sanctuary, adoption, education, and lost cost spays and neuters.† We strive:

††††††††††† † To provide a humane sanctuary for homeless animals;
To place as many animals as possible into safe and loving families,
††††††††††††††††† thus helping to reduce companion animal overpopulation;
To educate people in the humane treatment and care of animals.

There are numerous wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and†
kittens looking for
permanent homes.† All adopted animals†
spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and de-wormed prior†
to going to their new homes.† Vaccinations appropriate to†
the age of the animal are provided.† The shelter microchips†
all adopted animals.† The adoption fee of $75 for dogs and $65 for cats covers these†services.† Senior citizens qualify for a discounted adoption†fee of $55.† To view some of our available residents, please†select the dog or cat link above.† Better yet: visit the animals†in person at our shelter or at our off-site adoption days!††We offer off-site adoption every 2nd and 4th Saturday from†
noon-4 pm at Pet Supplies Plus in Athens.† Pet Supplies Plus is located in The Alps shopping center next to Office Max.

Dog in Jail

MOAS accepts surrendered animals from Madison and†
Oglethorpe counties only. You most present a valid driver's†
license to prove residency.† We do not charge a surrender†
fee.† However, we encourage donations to help cover the†
cost of caring for surrendered animals.†

We urge pet owners to surrender animals only as a last†
resort.† Many animal behavior problems can be treated with training,†
fencing, and increased attention.† Also, please spay and†
neuter your pets.† Although the shelter will accept your dogs†
puppies, we would rather see the birth of unwanted animals†

Shelter runs
The Shelter:

We are very proud of our modern shelter.† We can comfortably house over 120 animals.† The shelter is situated on 20 acres of land leased from Madison County.† The building was constructed by a contractor hired by MOAS.† The cost of shelter construction was financed completely through private donations!† It cost the citizens of Madison and Oglethorpe nothing!† Currently, county residents pay only $3.00 per year to fund the shelter's operation.† Private donations make up the rest of the shelter's operating budget.†

The shelter was designed to be a modern, comfortable building that will serve county residents for many years.† There is a large, airy lobby atrium which allows for comfortable human-animal interaction as well as adequate ventilation for the comfort of our residents.† We have a reading and education area for educational displays and special events.† Our spacious puppy room allows us to quarantine new puppies to prevent the spread of disease and also provides visitors with a great viewing opportunity.†† Our state of the art surgical suite allows us to perform spay and neuter operations for our shelter residents, animal rescue groups, and the community at large.† If you have never visited the shelter - we urge you to do so.†

For a $35.00 PayPal donation you can sponsor the spay or neuter of a pet.† This greatly increases their chance of adoption - they can leave the shelter immediately with a new family and they can go to off-site adoptions held twice monthly.† Just be sure to include the name of the pet you wish to sponsor when you make your donation!
