Welcome to the Tax Commissioner's Office
The Tax Commissioner's Office is located in the Government Complex in Danielsville and is the only location in Madison County for handling motor vehicle transaction and the billing and collection of Property, Mobile Home, and Timber Taxes.
Motor Vehicle Information
***In order to change your address in the Georgia Registration and Titling program you must have a valid driver's license reflecting your current address!***
Vehicle Registrations
Purchase of new or used vehicles must also be registered within 30 days. Titles are required on vehicles manufactured from 1986 to current. Applying for titles and registering a vehicle for the first time requires that you come in person.
New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency in Georgia. A Georgia driver's license must be obtained before registering your vehicle. Driver's license must show proof of county residency. If you are moving from another county you must update your driver's license before registering the vehicle in Madison County.
T.A.V.T.: O.C.G.A. § 48-5C-1 effective March 1, 2013 requires all Ad Valorem Tax to be paid on vehicles that require a title at the time of title application, these vehicles are exempt from sales and use tax and annual ad valorem tax, also known as the "birthday tax". TAVT is a one-time tax that is imposed on the fair market value (or taxable base) of the vehicle The manner in which fair market value is determined depends on whether the motor vehicle is new or used.
Tag Renewals
Georgia law requires that all auto tags be renewed within the 30 day period prior to the owner's birthday. Those who have obtained Georgia license plates and/or decals during the current year will receive a renewal prebill the following year to renew the tag and pay the ad valorem taxes. If you do not receive your renewal at least 30 days prior to your birthday, or if fees are not calculated on the renewal you have received, please call our office for further information. Always have your tag number available when calling this office. Failure to received a renewal notice does not exempt you from penalties or fines that may be imposed after the due date.
When possible, renew by mail to avoid long lines.
Tax Collection
Mobile Homes
All mobile homes must display a current mobile home decal. these annual decals can be obtained in the Tax Commissioners office and are provided upon payment of ad valorem taxes each year. Tax bills for mobile homes are generally mailed in late January and are due by April 1st of each year.
Mobile home owners that qualify for homestead exemption will not receive a mobile home tax bill at the beginning of the year. The homesteaded mobile home tax will be included on the property tax bill at the end of the year. You will have to apply for homestead with the Property Valuation office to see if you qualify.
Property Taxes
Property taxes for real and personal property are generally mailed in September and and have a normal due date of December 20.
Partial payments on taxes are accepted.
Real property includes tax on land and improvements. Personal property refers to tax on furniture, fixtures, tools, inventory and equipment used in the operation of a business.
Timber Tax
Standing timber is assessed for ad valorem taxation only once, at the time of harvest or sale, separate and apart from the underlying land. Such timber is assessed at 100% of its fair market value.
All timber harvest or sales must be reported in the county where the timber was grown to either the Tax Commissioners office or the Property Valuation office, depending on the type of transaction. The tax is paid to the Tax Commissioner of that county. Timber tax is collected in the accounting department where the timber deeds are stamped so they can be recorded in the Superior Court Clerk's Office.
